# Can I withdraw my project from Verra, and what happens to credits not yet issued?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/verra-withdraw-project-unissued-credits-cancelled

Yes, by sending a withdrawal request form through the Verra Project Hub. If Verra approves, approved net reductions not yet issued are issued as Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) and cancelled at once (unless the project is registered under Verra's Scope Standard Program). A project that has issued VCUs cannot withdraw in five listed situations.

## How withdrawal works (section 4.7.5)

So withdrawing does not turn unissued reductions into units you can sell. The section excepts projects registered under Verra's Scope Standard Program and sets separate buffer credit rules for land-use projects that have issued VCUs, so read it in full before you file.

1. The project proponent submits a digital Withdrawal Request Form through the Verra Project Hub.
2. Verra reviews it and may ask for more information.
3. If approved, Verra changes the project status to withdrawn. Approved net reductions and removals not yet issued as VCUs are issued and immediately cancelled on approval.

## When a project that has issued VCUs cannot withdraw

- It is under quality control review.
- It has an outstanding buffer replenishment obligation, or a potential loss event has been detected.
- It is expected to have excess VCUs after a baseline re-evaluation that the methodology requires.
- There is an unresolved comment, complaint or appeal that may reasonably lead to one of the three conditions above.
- There is an open project review request about it.

## Coming back

A withdrawn project may rejoin by sending Verra a letter asking to, following the procedure in section 5.3.9. Verra reviews whether it is eligible and tells the proponent. If it is not eligible it stays withdrawn.

## If the plan is to move to another registry

Withdrawing is only the first step. The rules for projects that were registered elsewhere, and for leaving Verra for a non-Verra programme, are in the linked pages.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible is not part of Verra's process. Its in-house check is not an accredited third-party verification.
