# How do I calculate the carbon footprint of a water meter?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/water-meter-carbon-footprint-per-meter

Weigh the brass or plastic body, the register and the internal parts per meter and multiply by supplier figures, adding electronics for smart meters. Add machining, moulding, assembly and calibration energy, then divide the plant's energy by meters made.

## Material

- Brass or engineering plastic body.
- Impeller, magnets and register.
- Electronics and battery for smart meters.

## Process

- Casting or machining brass bodies, or moulding plastic ones.
- Assembly.
- Flow calibration and pressure testing.

## Per meter

Report per meter by size and body material. A brass body usually carries more footprint than a plastic one of the same size.

## Worked example: plant energy per meter (one month)

- Electricity: 50,000 kWh x 0.710 = 35,500 kg CO2
- Meters made: 40,000
- Plant total: 35,500 / 40,000 = 0.887 kg CO2 per meter
- Add brass or plastic and any electronics for the full figure

Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
