# How do I calculate the carbon footprint of wooden toys, such as Channapatna toys?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/wooden-toys-carbon-footprint-per-kg

Add the wood, lac or lacquer colours, varnish and packaging per kg of toys, then lathe and drying energy. Divide by kilograms sold. Turned wooden toys use little fossil energy per kg; wood carbon is reported separately, and colours and packaging can be a large share.

## Materials

- Wood such as hale or rubberwood: count wood bought, including turning waste.
- Lac, natural or synthetic colours, varnish.
- Cartons, tissue and labels; export packing can outweigh small toys.

## Energy

- Lathe motors, often small and many.
- Drying, by sun or kiln.
- Generator diesel.

## Per kg or per piece

Report per kg and per piece for each product line. If artisans work at home on their own lathes, ask for their electricity units or estimate from motor ratings and hours, and label the estimate.

## Worked example: toy unit per kg (one month)

- Electricity: 3,000 kWh x 0.710 = 2,130 kg CO2
- Toys sold (kg): 4,000
- Plant total: 2,130 / 4,000 = 0.532 kg CO2 per kg
- Add wood, lac, colours and packaging for the full figure

Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
