# Biochar MRV software and offline field app for carbon projects

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/carbon-removal/projects

With the offline field app, your agent walks the edge of the plot and the phone draws it. Big buttons and pictures, so it needs little reading. Everything saves on the phone and uploads when there is signal. Nothing is lost. For biochar and rice projects, and the FPOs that bring farmers into them.

- Walk the edge of the plot.
- The phone draws the plot.
- Geotagged photos, with place and time.
- Signal found. Everything uploads.

## Every batch, checked on the spot.

For each batch the agent logs straw weight, kiln heat, lab result and geotagged photos. Low heat, a failed lab test or biochar spread outside the plot is flagged right there, not at audit.

### The kiln writes its own log.

Kiln sensor temperature logs stream into the batch record while it burns. Nobody types them in later.

### Follow one batch from straw to soil.

The chain of custody runs from straw collection to the kiln, the lab test and spreading in the field. Automatic flags hold a batch the day a check fails.

1. Straw collected: Weighed at the farm, with a geotagged photo. Flag: transport distance logged: 14 km to the kiln.
2. Kiln: The sensor log is attached to the batch as it burns. Flag: kiln at 450 °c or more.
3. Lab test: A sample goes to the lab to check the carbon is stable. Flag: h:corg 0.7 or less.
4. Into the field: Biochar goes into a farmer's plot, photographed with place and time. Flag: spread inside the plot.

A held batch stays out of the verifier pack until the record is fixed or the batch is set aside.

## Fix a wrong entry. Keep the old one.

Mistakes happen in the field. Edit the entry, pick a reason, and the earlier value stays in the history with who changed it and when. Your verifier sees both.

## One record on the phone, the tablet and the web.

The agent fills it in on a phone in the field. The supervisor checks it on a tablet at the kiln. Your team sees it on the web next to every other batch.

## Every farmer and kiln on one screen.

From 5,000 farmers to 50,000. See which villages are ready for the verifier, which batches are held and which kiln needs a visit.

## Download one pack for your verifier.

The verifier evidence pack holds the straw-to-soil record for every batch and a map of every farm. Registry submission is prepared from the same record.

- Chain of custody: Every batch from straw to soil, with each reading's time, place and source.
- Map of every farm: Each plot as the agent walked it, with the spreading photos pinned inside.
- Flags and fixes: What was held, why, and every edit with the value it replaced.
- Registry submission: Prepared for Verra VM0044, Puro.earth or Verra VM0051, from the same record.

An accredited verifier checks the pack and the registry issues the credits. Senseible builds and checks the record before it gets there.

## Show your financier every tonne delivered.

Forward contract and milestone tracking keeps pre-purchases, payouts and the delivery schedule next to the evidence. Each payout points to the batches that earned it.

1. Pre-purchase signed. Buyer and financier agree tonnes and dates.
2. Kilns running. Sensor logs live on every kiln. First payout released.
3. First batches verified. The verifier signs off. Second payout released.
4. Credits issued. The registry issues credits on the verified tonnes.
5. First delivery. Tonnes delivered against the schedule.
6. Second delivery. Delivered or late, the schedule shows it.

## Two projects, start to finish.

### Crop residue to biochar for a farmer group

A farmer group stops burning what is left after harvest: rice or wheat straw, cane trash, cotton or maize stalks: most crop residues qualify. Agents weigh it at collection, the kiln logs its heat, the lab tests each batch and the biochar goes back into the farmers' plots. In the record: farmers and plots, straw weights, kiln logs, lab results, spreading photos. Credited under Verra VM0044 or Puro.earth.

### Paddy water management for rice farms

Farmers let the paddy dry until the water sits 15 cm below the soil, then flood again. Each field tube reading is dated and geotagged. Under IPCC defaults, that gives off about 45% less methane than a field kept flooded. In the record: plots and sowing dates, dated tube readings, hectares actually dried, extra nitrous oxide subtracted. Credited under Verra VM0051.

## Straight answers

### What is dMRV for carbon projects?

Digital measurement, reporting and verification. Kiln sensors, lab results, field photos and plot boundaries are captured as they happen, with the time, place and source attached, so your verifier checks one record instead of rebuilding it from paper and messages.

### What does biochar MRV software need to record?

The chain of custody for every batch: residue weight and where it came from, transport distance, the kiln temperature log, the lab result for H:Corg, and proof the biochar went into a named plot. Emissions from collection, the kiln and transport are subtracted before credits are issued.

### What do the automatic flags check?

Each batch is checked as it moves: the kiln reached 450 °C or more, the lab H:Corg is 0.7 or less, the spreading photo sits inside the plot, and the transport distance is logged. A batch that fails is held and kept out of the verifier pack until it is fixed or set aside.

### Does the field app work without internet?

Yes. Agents sign up farmers, walk the edge of each plot and take geotagged photos with no signal. Everything saves on the phone, uploads when it finds a connection and is kept in the cloud, so nothing is lost.

### What happens when an agent enters something wrong?

The agent edits the entry and picks a reason. The earlier value stays in the history with who changed it and when, and the verifier evidence pack shows both.

### How many farmers can one project hold?

From 5,000 farmers to 50,000, with every plot, kiln and batch in one record. The same record opens on a phone, a tablet and the web.

### Does Senseible verify or issue the credits?

No. An accredited verifier checks your record against the methodology, and the registry issues the credits. Senseible builds and checks the record, prepares the verifier evidence pack and the registry submission; it is not the accredited verifier.

### Which methodologies do the records follow?

Biochar records follow what Verra VM0044 and Puro.earth ask for, including the H:Corg stability test. Rice records follow Verra VM0051, which covers alternate wetting and drying.

### Can our financiers follow a forward contract?

Yes. Pre-purchases, milestone payouts and the delivery schedule sit next to the evidence, so a financier sees which batches earned each payout and whether delivery is on time.
