# Green Hydrogen for MSMEs: When Does It Actually Pay in 2026?

Green hydrogen will not save every MSME in 2026. It will save specific ones in specific sectors with specific electricity contracts. This article tells you which.

## Where hydrogen makes sense

- High-temperature process heat (>400°C) where electrification is hard
- Steel reduction (DRI route)
- Ammonia production
- Refining
- Heavy-duty long-haul trucking and shipping

## Where it does not

- Space heating (heat pumps win)
- Light vehicles (batteries win)
- Low-temperature process heat (electric resistance + storage wins)
- Power generation at small scale

## The 2026 economics

The cost of green hydrogen depends mostly on three inputs:

- Renewable electricity cost, which is lowest in sunny or windy regions
- Electrolyser capex and how many hours a year the electrolyser runs
- Financing cost and available subsidies

Without subsidies, green hydrogen still generally costs more than grey hydrogen made from natural gas. India's SIGHT programme under the National Green Hydrogen Mission offers production incentives that narrow the gap for selected producers.

## What an MSME should do this year

1. Audit your current fuel mix and process temperatures
2. Identify only the loads above 400°C
3. Get an indicative quote from a green H2 developer for 2027 supply
4. Use the [Energy Transition calculator](https://senseible.earth/calculators/energy-transition-savings) to compare against captive solar + electric heating
5. Apply for SIGHT or Rajasthan/Gujarat state incentives if H2 wins

## A realistic 2026 expectation

Low-emission hydrogen is still a small share of global hydrogen use. MSMEs considering early supply contracts should compare them carefully against electrification options and expected future prices.
