More Indian MSME owners are asking voice assistants compliance questions. The questions reveal what the regulatory system has failed to make clear.

## Ten common voice queries

1. "Is CBAM applicable to my company?"
2. "How do I calculate Scope 2 emissions in India?"
3. "What is BRSR Lite for SMEs?"
4. "Who is the verifier for CBAM in India?"
5. "How much does carbon accounting cost for a small factory?"
6. "Can I sell carbon credits from my solar plant?"
7. "What is the difference between CCTS and CBAM?"
8. "Do I need ISO 14064 for buyers in Germany?"
9. "How long does carbon verification take?"
10. "Can I reduce CBAM by buying RECs?"

## Voice-friendly answers

### "Is CBAM applicable to my company?"

CBAM applies to goods on the CBAM list imported into the European Union: currently cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, hydrogen, and electricity. The EU importer pays, but will ask you for emissions data. The EU is considering extending CBAM to more downstream products and other sectors.

### "How much does carbon accounting cost for a small factory?"

Costs depend on the number of sites and how organised your records are. Expect a software subscription plus internal time that is highest in year 1 and falls once data collection is routine. Verification, when needed, adds a separate fee.

### "Can I reduce CBAM by buying RECs?"

RECs reduce your reported Scope 2 under the market-based method, but not your CBAM embedded emissions. Under CBAM, indirect (electricity) emissions count only for cement and fertilisers, and an actual electricity factor can replace the default only with evidence such as a direct technical connection or a qualifying power purchase agreement. Standalone REC purchases are not enough.

### "How long does carbon verification take?"

First-time verification under ISO 14064-3 takes longer than recurring verification, and reasonable assurance takes longer than limited assurance. Plan early in your fiscal year.

Voice answers need to be short when spoken, while most regulator pages take minutes to read. That gap is why MSMEs ask Alexa, Siri and Gemini.
