# The Water-Carbon Nexus for Textile and Leather MSMEs: Why You Cannot Solve One Alone

Textile dyeing and leather tanning are among India's most water-intensive industries and major Scope 1+2 emitters. Most decarbonisation plans ignore water. That is a mistake.

## The hidden link

| Process | Water use | Energy use | Carbon |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cotton dyeing (conventional) | High | High | High |
| Cotton dyeing (low-water) | Lower | Lower | Lower |
| Leather tanning | Significant | Significant (process heat, effluent treatment) | Depends on fuel and grid |

## Why water cuts cut carbon

Every litre of process water needs to be:

1. Pumped from source (electricity)
2. Heated for dyeing or tanning (gas or electricity)
3. Treated post-process (electricity + chemicals)

Cut water use and you cut all three, so water efficiency often doubles as low-cost carbon abatement.

## High-impact retrofits

### Reactive dyeing → cold pad batch

Large cuts in water and steam use compared with conventional exhaust dyeing.

### Air dyeing

Very low water and energy use, but high capex.

### Chrome recovery

Reduces chrome chemical purchases, water use and effluent load.

### Membrane filtration + recycle

Recycles a large share of process water; recovering heat from hot effluent also saves steam.

Measure water, steam and electricity before and after any retrofit so the carbon saving can be verified.

## Reporting framework

ZDHC InCheck + GHG Protocol Scope 1+2 in one disclosure gives buyers both views in one pack. Use [Senseible](https://senseible.earth/) to compile both from utility bills + chemical purchase records.

## Regulation tailwind

Zero Liquid Discharge requirements from CPCB and state pollution control boards already require water recovery at many textile and tannery units. Layer carbon accounting on top: most data already exists.
