# Aluminium: Carbon Accounting Guide

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/industries/aluminium

Aluminium is covered by EU CBAM. For extrusion, casting and remelting units, the power bill and the source of the metal (primary or scrap) drive the embedded emissions buyers ask for.

## The question eu importers ask

“Can you give us actual embedded emissions for these extrusions, and how much is recycled metal?”

This sector is covered by EU CBAM (Regulation (EU) 2023/956). Since 1 January 2026, EU importers declare embedded emissions; without actual producer data, default values with a mark-up apply.

## Scope 1 sources (evidence: fuel invoices)

- Melting and holding furnace fuel
- Homogenising and ageing ovens
- Anode consumption in smelting
- Forklifts and on-site vehicles

## Scope 2 sources (evidence: electricity bills)

- Electrolysis (smelters)
- Extrusion presses
- Induction heating
- Compressed air and cooling

## Scope 3 sources (evidence: purchase and freight invoices)

- Primary ingot and billet purchases
- Scrap purchases
- Alloying elements
- Inbound and outbound freight

## Worked example

Illustrative monthly quantities: 2,50,000 kWh of grid electricity, 30,000 scm of piped natural gas, 2,000 litre of diesel, multiplied by the emission factors Senseible uses and annualised. Energy only. The emissions embedded in purchased primary metal, often the largest share, come from the metal supplier’s data.

## Where reductions usually start

- Higher recycled content
- Renewable electricity supply
- Furnace burner and insulation upgrades
- Press and die efficiency
- Billet heating with recovered heat
