Can I sell timber from trees planted under an agroforestry carbon credit project?
Not by clear-cutting. Under Isometric's agroforestry protocol, as ICVCM describes it, clear-cutting woody vegetation for timber sale is not permitted, even after the commitment period. Selective harvesting needs Isometric's prior approval. The land must keep producing non-timber crops or livestock products with trees integrated.
What the protocol allows
- Systems where trees are deliberately integrated with crops or animals, such as silvopasture, alley cropping, orchards and windbreaks.
- Non-timber commodities must remain the primary products of the working landscape.
- Selective harvesting, only with prior approval by Isometric.
What it does not allow
- Clear-cutting of woody vegetation for timber sale.
- The ban continues beyond the commitment period.
Why it is strict
Agroforestry sits in the afforestation, reforestation and revegetation category. It stores carbon biologically, so it must be managed against the risk that the carbon is released again in the short to medium term.
Before you sign
- Ask in writing which trees, if any, you may thin or harvest, and who approves it.
- Ask what happens to your credits if you fell a tree.
- Check that your main income stays with the crop or the livestock.
What Senseible does here
Senseible does not issue or verify carbon credits and is not a registry. It gives carbon credit eligibility signals from your own records and keeps those records in order for a verifier. Verified here means rule checks passed against the evidence, not third-party assurance.
