Senseible

A customer asks for the emissions linked to what I sold them. How do I allocate my footprint to one customer?

Take your Scope 1 and 2 for the same period and multiply by the customer's share of your output, measured in tonnes, pieces or metres. Use machine hours when products take very different energy per unit, and revenue only when nothing physical works. If you can meter their product's line, allocate from that line.

The steps

  1. Fix the period. Use the customer's reporting year if you can, or your financial year with a note.
  2. Total your Scope 1 and Scope 2 for that period from fuel invoices and electricity bills.
  3. If the customer's product runs on its own line or machines with a sub-meter, start from that line's energy instead of the whole plant.
  4. Pick an allocation key and work out the customer's share.
  5. Multiply, and send the result with the key, the period and the factors used.

Choosing the key

Scope 1 and 2 only, or a product footprint

CDP Supply Chain asks suppliers to allocate their Scope 1 and 2 to the customer. A product footprint, such as one built to the PACT Methodology, goes further: it adds the raw materials and parts you bought, per unit of product. Ask which one the customer wants and label your answer, because the two can differ several times over.

What to send with the number

Worked example: one customer, two keys

Figures are illustrative. Use tonnes unless their products take more energy per tonne than the rest.

What Senseible does here

Senseible gives your Scope 1 and 2 for a period from your bills and invoices, with the factor on every line. The allocation key and the customer's share are your own figures, so present them as self-declared.
