Can an aluminium melting furnace on furnace oil switch to a wood gasifier?

Yes, and it cuts fossil CO2 by about 221 t a year on BEE's Jagadhri figures: 76.8 kL of furnace oil replaced by 268.8 t of wood and 10,933 kWh. The report lists the CO2 cut as Nil; wood CO2 is biogenic and reported separately. Payback 1.69 years at 2010 prices.

What BEE costed

Why the report's Nil is wrong

The report treats the wood's CO2 as if it were fossil and concludes there is no cut. Under the GHG Protocol, CO2 from burning wood is biogenic and reported separately, outside Scope 1. The furnace oil was fossil. So Scope 1 falls by the oil's CO2, about 228 t, less about 7 t for the gasifier's power. Methane and nitrous oxide from the wood flame stay in Scope 1, but they are small.

If your aluminium goes to the EU

Aluminium is a CBAM good. Biomass fuel counts as zero only if it meets the EU's renewable energy sustainability criteria and you can prove it. Without that proof, the wood's CO2 counts in full.

Before you switch

1,200 melts a year, 480 t of aluminium

Furnace oil at our factor of 2.97 kg CO2 per litre and grid at CEA's FY 2025-26 factor, both estimates.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads furnace oil invoices and power bills into monthly CO2 records linked to each bill, and gives the CBAM data an EU importer asks for from the same records. It does not decide whether your wood meets EU sustainability rules.
