How much gas and power did Ankleshwar chemical units use in TERI's 2011 SIDBI study?
About 408,423 toe in 2010-11: 382 million scm of natural gas and 715 million kWh, by TERI's study for SIDBI of chemical units making 100 to 1,000 tonnes a year each. It is 15 times BEE's 2020-21 figure, but not comparable: the 2011 total came from the gas and power companies' sales to the estate's chemical units.
Two studies that cannot be read as a trend
- 2010-11, TERI for SIDBI under a World Bank and GEF project: close to 1,200 MSME units in the estate, about 600 of them chemical. Gas from Gujarat Gas, electricity from DGVCL's sales to chemical industries, both LT and HT. Total about 408,423 toe.
- 2020-21, TERI for BEE: 750 chemical MSMEs, 26,637 toe, for about 315,512 t of product.
- The 2011 gas table counts 723 gas-connected chemical units, and the report says their 382 million scm was about 38% of all gas used by industry in Gujarat. The report does not say large plants were left out.
- The 408,423 toe total is built on 715 million kWh from DGVCL for 2010-11. The text also quotes 960 million kWh for 2011-12, a later year; keep 715 with the total.
Gas by product, 2010-11
- Dyes, pigments and other basic chemicals: 475 units, 271.4 million scm, 71% of the gas.
- Pesticides: 58 units, 50.25 million scm, 13%.
- Pharmaceuticals: 190 units, 60.3 million scm, 16%.
- Firewood: about 3,250 t a year, in some micro and small units only, at about 3,200 kcal per kg. The pollution control board was pushing units off it.
The plant behind those numbers
- Boilers of 300 kg to 3 t of steam an hour at 7 to 10 kg per cm2, on gas or wood, for jacket heating and live steam into the reactor.
- Thermic fluid heaters of 1 to 4 lakh kcal an hour on gas, oil at 180 to 200 C. Hot air generators of 1 to 2 lakh kcal an hour feed tray and spin flash dryers.
- Drying is the slowest step: 20 to 36 hours a batch.
- Stainless reaction vessels of 1 to 10 kL; chillers of 5 to 50 TR, and 125 kg ice blocks in place of a chiller in some micro and small plants.
- Energy was 5 to 7% of manufacturing cost for inorganic chemicals and 12 to 15% for dyes.
Where the study saw waste
Horizontal agitators, which lose power in transmission, where vertical ones were available locally. Locally made boilers, heaters and hot air generators with no waste heat recovery. Standard rather than efficient motors in most equipment, old dryers, and local chillers well behind current designs.
Which figure to use
For a customer's question, neither: your own gas bills in scm with the calorific value printed, and your electricity bills in kWh. Use the 2020-21 study when someone asks how the cluster compares, and the 2011 split when you want to show how gas use differed between dye, pesticide and pharma units.
Average gas per unit by segment, 2010-11 (estimate)
- Dyes and pigments: 271.4 million scm / 475 = about 571,000 scm a unit x 2.05 kg = about 1,170 t CO2
- Pesticides: 50.25 million / 58 = about 866,000 scm = about 1,780 t CO2
- Pharmaceuticals: 60.3 million / 190 = about 317,000 scm = about 650 t CO2
- Whole sector: 382 million scm x 2.05 = about 783,000 t; 715 million kWh x 0.675 (FY 2025-26 grid factor) = about 483,000 t
Averages over every gas-connected unit of each type in 2010-11, large or small. The report's 8,500 kcal per scm gives about 2.0 kg CO2 per scm; 2.05 is Senseible's default.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads your gas and electricity bills into monthly scm, kWh and CO2, kept by product line where your records allow, so a pharma or textile customer can check each figure against a bill.
