Are auto components covered by EU CBAM?
Mostly not. Parts of motor vehicles under CN 8708, and engine parts under chapter 84, are not in Annex I today. Some steel and aluminium goods auto suppliers ship are covered, such as bolts under 7318, tube fittings under 7307, other steel articles under 7326 and aluminium articles under 7616.
Not covered today
- 8708: parts and accessories of motor vehicles, such as brake parts, axles and gearboxes.
- 8409 and 8483: engine parts, crankshafts, gears and bearings housings.
- 8511 and 8544: ignition equipment and insulated wiring harnesses.
Covered when declared under these headings
- 7318: screws, bolts, nuts and washers of iron or steel.
- 7307: tube or pipe fittings of iron or steel.
- 7326: other articles of iron or steel, which can include some forged or stamped parts not classified as vehicle parts.
- 7616: other articles of aluminium, which can include some aluminium castings.
Check each part number
Classification is by part, not by industry. Make a list of your EU part numbers with the CN code your buyer declares. Parts under covered headings need embedded emissions data; the rest do not, for now.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel and electricity bills into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input when a covered part needs embedded emissions data. Its CBAM calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034.
