Are grey and ductile iron castings exported to the EU covered by CBAM?

Mostly not. Grey and ductile iron castings declared under CN 7325, other cast articles of iron or steel, are not in CBAM Annex I, and castings classified as pump, valve or machine parts are not covered either. Cast iron pipes under 7303 and cast pipe fittings under 7307 are covered. Your EU importer's CN code decides.

Cast iron goods that are in Annex I

Cast iron goods that are outside it today

A casting made for a specific machine is normally classified with that machine, even as a rough casting, once it has the shape and essential character of the finished part. That takes it out of Chapter 73 and outside CBAM under the current Annex I.

How to confirm for each casting you ship

  1. Take the 8 digit code from your shipping bill and check the first 4 digits against Annex I.
  2. Ask your EU importer which CN code it declares. Its declaration, not your invoice description, is what counts.
  3. Where a casting could sit in 7325 or in a machine heading, the importer can ask an EU customs authority for a binding tariff information ruling.
  4. If a product is covered, prepare embedded emissions per tonne: melting energy, whether cupola coke or induction furnace electricity, plus the emissions of the pig iron you charge.

What could change

In December 2025 the Commission proposed extending CBAM to many steel and aluminium intensive downstream products from 2028. As of October 2026 it is not law. Check whether 7325 and your machine-part codes appear in its annex and in the text finally adopted. Separately, importers bringing in 50 tonnes or less of covered goods a year are exempt under Regulation (EU) 2025/2083; that changes who declares, not which goods are covered.

Worked example: three products from one foundry

Codes are examples; confirm the full CN code for each product with the importer.

What Senseible does here

Senseible's CBAM cost calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034 for iron and steel goods that are covered, and Senseible reads the HSN code on each invoice line. The CN code on the declaration is your importer's.
