Can rice husk or bagasse power credits get the ICVCM CCP label?
No. ICVCM decided that ACM0006 (electricity and heat from biomass, versions 1.0 to 16.0) and ACM0018 (electricity from biomass in power-only plants, versions 1.0 to 6.0) do not meet the Core Carbon Principles, under both Gold Standard and Verra's VCS. Credits issued under them cannot carry the CCP label.
The decisions
- ACM0006, electricity and heat generation from biomass, v1.0 to 16.0: Does not meet, under Gold Standard and the VCS.
- ACM0018, electricity generation from biomass in power-only plants, v1.0 to 6.0: Does not meet, under both.
- AM0036, biomass in heat generation equipment, v1.0 to 7.0: Does not meet, under both. This is the one a biomass boiler replacing coal or oil might look to.
This is a decision, not a deferral
These were assessed by a multistakeholder working group and decided by ICVCM's Governing Board. That is different from categories marked "Very Unlikely To Meet", which were only deprioritised. A programme can still submit a new methodology or version for assessment, so watch for revised methods rather than expecting the old ones to change.
What the husk or bagasse still earns you
- Lower fossil Scope 1 at your own site when biomass replaces coal, diesel or furnace oil.
- Biomass power that you sell carries a renewable attribute; decide in the contract who claims it.
- Credits without the CCP label can still find buyers who do not require it, but expect fewer of them.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel invoices, so a switch from coal to husk shows as lower fossil Scope 1 in your records, and it gives carbon credit eligibility signals. It does not label, rate or sell credits.
