How do I calculate the carbon footprint of BOPP packing tape per roll?
Weigh the BOPP film, adhesive and paper core in a roll and multiply each by its supplier's per-kg figure. Add the coating line's fuel and electricity and slitting power, divided by rolls passed. Film and adhesive are usually most of it.
Materials
- BOPP film by weight per roll, from width, length and micron.
- Acrylic water-based or hot-melt adhesive by dry weight.
- Paper core and printing ink for printed tape.
Process
- Coating line with its drying oven, often heated by fuel.
- Corona treatment and rewinding.
- Slitting, shrink wrapping and cartons.
Per roll
State width, length and film thickness with the figure, since rolls vary widely.
Worked example: tape plant per roll (one month)
- Electricity: 40,000 kWh x 0.710 = 28,400 kg CO2
- PNG: 6,000 SCM x 2.05 = 12,300 kg CO2
- Rolls passed: 500,000
- Plant total: 40,700 / 500,000 = 0.0814 kg CO2 per roll
- Add film, adhesive and cores for the full figure
Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
