How do I calculate emission intensity per tonne of product for BRSR?
Divide Scope 1 plus Scope 2 emissions for the year by the tonnes of product made in the same year and boundary. 9,000 t CO2e over 30,000 t of output gives 0.30 t CO2e per tonne. Name the product and unit, and keep the same denominator every year.
Pick the denominator
- Tonnes of finished product from production records, not sales, so stock changes do not distort it.
- For several products, use a common unit (tonnes, or tonnes of a reference product) and explain it.
- Keep the same plants in the numerator and denominator.
Why add it
Revenue intensity moves with prices. A physical intensity shows whether the plant actually makes each tonne with less carbon, which buyers and lenders understand.
Watch for
- Seasonal or partial years: compare like with like.
- Captive power sold outside: subtract its share before dividing.
Worked example
- Scope 1: 3,600 t CO2e. Scope 2: 5,400 t CO2e. Total 9,000 t CO2e.
- Output: 30,000 t of castings.
- Intensity = 9,000 / 30,000 = 0.30 t CO2e per tonne.

What Senseible does here
Senseible reads kWh, litres and kg from electricity bills and fuel invoices into a dated record per site, with the factor and source on every line, and prepares BRSR drafts from that data. Reports are self-declared drafts.
