Can our chartered accountant prepare our carbon inventory?
Yes, if they learn the method. No Indian rule says who must prepare a company carbon inventory. A CA is good at tracing figures to invoices, which is most of the work. They need the GHG Protocol rules on scopes and factors. The same person should not also verify it.
What a CA brings
- Ledgers and invoice trails they already know.
- Discipline on cut-off dates and duplicates.
- Sign-off habits that verifiers like.
What they need to learn
- Scope 1, 2 and 3 boundaries.
- Activity data in litres, kWh and kg, not only rupees.
- Which emission factors to use and why.
