What is the carbon footprint per tonne of caustic soda made in India?

It depends mostly on where the cell power comes from. Multiply electrolysis kWh per tonne of chlorine by your grid or captive plant factor, add steam fuel for concentration, then share the total by mass across chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen. On grid power at 0.710 the figure is usually lower than on a captive coal plant.

One process, three products

Membrane cell electrolysis of brine gives chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen together. From the chemistry, each tonne of chlorine comes with about 1.128 t of caustic soda (100% NaOH basis) and 0.028 t of hydrogen. You cannot run the cell for caustic alone, so the emissions must be shared.

Mass allocation, used in the Euro Chlor eco-profile method, gives every tonne of product the same footprint: total CO2 divided by about 2.156 t of products per tonne of chlorine.

What goes into the total

Grid or captive power changes everything

Many Indian chlor-alkali plants run captive coal units. A small captive coal unit's CO2 per kWh can be well above the grid's 0.710 kg, so the same plant can show a much higher footprint on captive power. Calculate the factor from the captive plant's own fuel and generation records each year, and report it with the source.

For buyers of caustic soda

Ask the supplier for the footprint per tonne on a stated basis: 100% NaOH or as lye, allocation method, power source and year. Convert lye quantities on your invoices to 100% NaOH before multiplying, or you will overstate the figure. Chlor-alkali is also a sector under India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, so large producers already track plant-level intensity.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads power bills and captive plant coal invoices and applies 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh and 2.42 kg CO2 per kg of coal, with the source on each line. For buyers, caustic soda purchases go to the supplier evidence trail.
