What can an EU importer do when the producer will not share CBAM installation data?
The importer can use the official default values for those goods. They are set high on purpose and include a mark-up, so the CBAM bill is usually larger than with actual data. Most importers use this to press suppliers, and switch to suppliers who can send real figures.
Options for the importer
- Use the default value for the CN code and country.
- Ask again with a short data template and a date.
- Move volume to a producer that provides actual emissions.
Why producers hesitate
Fear of sharing costs or process details. The CBAM figure needs emissions per tonne and the method, not prices or recipes.
For the exporter
Sharing an actual figure often lowers your buyer's cost compared with the default. That is a reason to be chosen.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, power and production records into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions your EU importer asks for.
