Can a biochar project earn credits under India's CCTS yet?
Not on BEE's methodology list as last updated on 7 July 2026. Biochar is named as an example technology in the approved waste and agriculture sectors, but none of the 12 approved methodologies covers it, and a project needs one to register. Check BEE's list for later additions before you plan.
What BEE has approved
- Sectors: BEE's memorandum of 20 September 2024 lists six phase 1 sectors and gives biochar as an example technology under both waste handling and agriculture.
- Methodologies: the list updated 7 July 2026 has 12. The two for agriculture cover methane from livestock and manure at households and small farms (BM AG04.001) and improved rice cultivation (BM AG04.002).
- A sector on the list is not a methodology. Without an approved methodology, a project has no route to register.
What a biochar producer can do now
- Use a voluntary standard such as Verra VM0044 v1.2, if your buyers are voluntary buyers.
- Keep feedstock, kiln, lab and application records to that standard from day one.
- Register the same tonnes in only one programme.
If BEE adds a biochar method
A project would then follow BEE's Detailed Procedure for the Offset Mechanism: a project design document, validation and verification by an accredited agency, and registration before any certificates are issued.
What Senseible does here
Senseible's carbon removal records follow Verra VM0044 v1.2 for biochar, with kiln sensor temperature logs, lab results and chain of custody kept for every batch.
