Can CCTS carbon credit certificates be banked for future years?
Yes. Certificates a plant earns and still holds after a compliance year can be banked, then sold in the Indian Carbon Market or used for a later year's target. Under BEE's October 2026 draft trading procedure, certificates bought on an exchange cannot be resold, and voluntary buyers can only retire them.
What the rules say
- 2025 target rules: banked means certificates left with a plant after it completes compliance for the year; they may be banked as the detailed procedure provides.
- Compliance procedure: remaining certificates may be banked for later compliance years, and banked certificates issued to the plant may be sold within the Indian Carbon Market or used for future compliance.
Limits in the draft trading procedure (October 2026)
- Certificates bought through a power exchange cannot be resold under any circumstances.
- Certificates bought by a non-obligated entity are for retirement only, with no resale or banking.
- Issued certificates can be banked or sold up to their validity, set by the compliance procedure.
What Senseible does here
Senseible keeps a plant's fuel and electricity invoices as dated, fingerprinted monthly records, the activity data its monitoring plan and verifier work from.
