What is the CIBIL MSME Rank (CMR), and what score do banks look for?
The CIBIL MSME Rank is a rating from CMR-1 to CMR-10 that TransUnion CIBIL gives a business from its credit record. CMR-1 is the least risky, CMR-10 the most likely to turn into a bad loan within a year. No single cut-off applies: each bank sets its own, usually alongside the promoter's personal CIBIL score.
How the rank works
The rank appears in the company credit report that a bank pulls when you apply. It is built from the business's credit history reported by lenders: loans and limits taken, how they were repaid, overdues, defaults and how much of the sanctioned limits you use. TransUnion CIBIL ranks businesses with total commercial borrowings of up to ₹50 crore, including those under ₹10 lakh since its 2020 update. Outside that range the report may show the rank as not applicable.
The rank estimates how likely the business is to become a non-performing asset in the next 12 months, compared with other MSMEs. TransUnion CIBIL defines the ten steps, not the bands: where one lender draws the line between acceptable and risky is its own policy.
What banks look for
Lenders do not publish a minimum CMR, and cut-offs differ by bank, product and loan size. Most check two things together: the business's CMR and the personal CIBIL score of the proprietor, partners or directors, which runs from 300 to 900. For a proprietorship or a young company, the personal score often carries more weight. A good rank helps; the approval, rate and terms remain the lender's decision.
No rank yet
A business that has never borrowed in its own name may have no rank. That is not a bad rank. Lenders then lean on the promoter's score, bank statements, GST returns and collateral or a CGTMSE guarantee.
How to improve it
- Pay every EMI and interest instalment by the due date; even short overdues are reported.
- Keep cash credit and overdraft use below the full limit where you can.
- Avoid applying to many lenders at once; each application adds an enquiry.
- Close or regularise old overdue accounts and get a closure letter.
- Get your company credit report and dispute any wrong entry through CIBIL; under RBI rules, credit information companies must resolve complaints within a set time.
What Senseible does here
The rank comes from your repayment record, not from carbon data. For a green loan, Senseible's readiness check and bill-backed emission records give the lender evidence about the project itself.
