How fast have compressed natural gas (CNG) sales grown in India, and which states sell the most gas per station?
The Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) Ready Reckoner shows CNG sales of 7,770 thousand tonnes in 2025-26, three times the 2,589 of 2020-21. On single-state rows Delhi sold about 2,665 tonnes per station, against about 374 in Tamil Nadu.
National sales, year by year
Table 3.7 gives CNG sales in thousand tonnes, from information submitted by city gas distribution (CGD) entities, and the source line says it is subject to revisions. The all-India total: 2,589 (2020-21), 3,968, 5,103, 5,652, 6,690 and 7,770 (2025-26). That is growth of 53.3, 28.6, 10.8, 18.4 and 16.1 percent year on year. The last figure is 3.0 times the first. The table covers all vehicles, not only trucks.
State rows, 2020-21 to 2025-26 (thousand tonnes)
- Delhi 785 to 1,218.
- Maharashtra 504 to 1,477.
- Gujarat 649 to 1,437.
- Uttar Pradesh 339 to 1,072.
- Haryana 173 to 682.
- Karnataka 3 to 288.
- Tamil Nadu 0.004 to 188.
Sales per station, a rough measure
Divide a state's 2025-26 sales by its stations on 1 April 2026 (Table 3.7 A). Use single-state rows only. Some sales sit in multi-state rows, such as Maharashtra and Gujarat together, so a state's true figure is a little higher than shown. Stations are counted at the end of the year, sales are for the whole year, so fast-growing states read low.
- Delhi: 1,218 thousand tonnes over 457 stations, about 2,665 tonnes each.
- Gujarat about 1,304, Haryana about 1,131, Maharashtra about 1,128.
- Uttar Pradesh about 784, Karnataka about 558, Tamil Nadu about 374.
- All India: 7,770 thousand tonnes over 8,916 stations, about 871 tonnes a station, or 2.4 tonnes a day.
Reading it without over-reading it
Our reading: a station that sells 2,665 tonnes a year is much busier than one that sells 374, and a fleet fuelling at the first kind may meet queues at peak hours. PPAC does not say this, and the table does not split sales by vehicle type, so it cannot tell you how much of the gas goes to goods vehicles.
Two worked lines
- India: 7,770 / 2,589 = 3.00 times in five years
- Delhi: 1,218,000 tonnes / 457 stations = 2,665 tonnes per station per year
- Tamil Nadu: 188,000 tonnes / 503 stations = 374 tonnes per station per year
- Delhi against Tamil Nadu: 2,665 / 374 = 7.1 times
Sales are Table 3.7 and stations are Table 3.7 A of the PPAC Ready Reckoner 2025-26. Per-station figures are our arithmetic on single-state rows.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills into monthly records, including CNG bills in kilograms for your own vehicles. It does not show station queues or state sales.
