Senseible

Why is a Coimbatore induction foundry's CBAM figure much lower than its carbon footprint?

Because CBAM counts only direct emissions for iron and steel goods, and an induction furnace's energy is electricity, which is left out. The CBAM figure is mostly the pig iron or other covered precursors charged; the full footprint adds the electricity, often about as much again.

Two numbers, two uses

Keep both ready

Send the CBAM figure only where the casting is declared under a CBAM code such as 7325. For pump and valve bodies declared under chapter 84, the buyer needs no CBAM data today but may still ask for the footprint.

Where the footprint can fall

Melting efficiency in kWh per tonne, yield, and the scrap share in the charge drive both figures. Renewable power bought through open access lowers the market-based footprint but not the CBAM figure.

Worked example: one tonne of good castings (illustrative inputs)

Quantities and the pig iron figure are illustrative.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your fuel and electricity bills into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions your EU importer asks for, and its CBAM cost calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034 for covered goods. Senseible does not verify emissions or file CBAM declarations.
