How do I calculate the cold chain emissions for one kilogram of food?

Add each cold stage per kilogram: pre-cooling and cold storage electricity at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, reefer truck diesel at 2.68 kg per litre, and retail chilling. Get each stage's energy per kilogram from the operator, and add refrigerant leaks where they are reported.

Stages to include

Getting per-kilogram data

Ask each operator for energy per kilogram or per pallet-day. Where you estimate, state the assumption and label it.

Food loss

A good cold chain reduces spoilage, which avoids wasting the farm footprint. Note loss rates as context, without netting them against cold chain emissions.

Worked example: one kilogram of produce (illustrative inputs)

Values are illustrative; get per-kilogram energy from each operator.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel invoices and fuel card statements (diesel 2.68 and CNG 2.69 kg CO2, IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 record. Hired transport goes to the Scope 3 evidence trail, and distance or tonne-km estimates are labelled as estimates.
