What pollution index score makes an industry Red, Orange, Green or White under CPCB?

CPCB scores air, water and hazardous waste equally, each out of 100. A pollution index of 80 or more is Red, 55 to under 80 Orange, 25 to under 55 Green, under 25 White. Its 2025 report covers 419 sectors: 125 Red, 137 Orange, 94 Green, 54 White and 9 Blue.

How the index is built

The score uses water emissions, air emissions, hazardous waste and resource consumption. Air, water and waste each carry equal weight and are scored out of 100, and a cumulative pollution index is calculated.

The bands

Blue

Blue marks essential environmental services, such as waste management. 9 sectors are Blue in the 2025 report.

New or left-out activities

State pollution control boards and committees may place any new or left-out sector in a colour using CPCB's 2016 method. If your activity is not on the list, ask your board.

The 2025 count

125 Red plus 137 Orange plus 94 Green plus 54 White plus 9 Blue makes the 419 sectors and sub-sectors.
