How does a diagnostic lab calculate its carbon footprint per test?

Add a year of Scope 1 (DG diesel, refrigerant leaks, any fuel) and Scope 2 (grid electricity), then divide by the number of tests reported from your LIS. Report a second figure that adds the Scope 3 you measured, mainly reagents, sample logistics and biomedical waste, so readers can see both.

What goes in each scope for a lab

Define the test count before dividing

Pull the count from the LIS for the same twelve months as the bills. Decide whether a profile of 20 parameters counts as one test or 20, and whether outsourced tests count. Write the rule down. A chain that counts parameters will show a far lower figure per test than one that counts orders, so per test figures from different labs are rarely comparable.

Chains with many sites

Calculate each processing lab and collection centre separately, then add. Collection centres are small and use mostly AC and lighting; the processing labs carry the analysers and cold storage. Divide each site's total by the tests that site processed, so a busy hub does not look worse than a quiet one for the wrong reason.

Where the reductions usually are

Worked example: one processing lab, one year

Illustrative figures. Refrigerant leaks would be added in kg CO2e; Scope 3 is reported as a second per test figure.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the lab's electricity bills and applies the CEA grid factor of 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0, and reads diesel invoices with litres at the IPCC 2006 default of 2.68 kg CO2 per litre. Reagent and consumable purchases can get a spend-based estimate, labelled as such.
