How do I calculate the carbon footprint of a distribution transformer for an export tender or EPD?

Weigh the materials in one unit, CRGO core steel, copper or aluminium windings, tank steel, oil and insulation, multiply each by a named factor, and add your factory's energy allocated per unit. That gives the cradle to gate figure. Report lifetime no-load and load losses separately; over 25 years they often outweigh manufacturing.

Start from the bill of materials

Factory energy per unit

Core cutting, winding, welding, shot blasting and painting, oven drying of the core and coil assembly, vacuum oil filling and testing all draw power or fuel. Add up a month's electricity and fuel and allocate it by the mass of transformers dispatched, or by standard hours per rating if sizes vary a lot. State which method you used.

Rules an EPD or tender will point to

In Europe, an EPD for electrical equipment follows EN 50693:2019, the product category rules for electronic and electrical products, usually through the PEP ecopassport programme and its specific rules for transformers. Those rules fix the functional unit, the reference lifetime and the loading used for the use stage. The no-load and load losses come from your IEC 60076 type test report.

Use stage: losses are the big number

No-load loss runs every hour the transformer is energised. Load loss rises with the square of the loading. Over a 20 to 30 year life these losses usually add more emissions than making the unit, which is why buyers compare loss levels. Calculate them with the grid factor of the country where the unit will run, and show them apart from the cradle to gate figure.

Worked example: one 250 kVA unit weighing 1,200 kg

Weights, material factors and the 0.5 kW no-load loss are illustrative, and load losses would add more. For an export unit use the destination grid's factor and the lifetime the product rules set.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the factory's electricity bills at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh and DG diesel invoices at 2.68 kg CO2 per litre into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the factory energy you allocate per unit. CRGO, copper and oil invoices go to the Scope 3 supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
