Does converting a diesel generator to dual fuel with a gas kit cut CO2, and by how much?

Yes, but only for the share of diesel the gas replaces. Natural gas emits about 24% less CO2 than diesel per unit of fuel energy, so a kit that replaces 60% of the diesel energy cuts CO2 by about 15%, less any efficiency loss. Methane slip from the engine can eat into that.

Where the 24% comes from

The IPCC 2006 default for diesel is 74.1 kg CO2 per GJ of fuel energy, and for natural gas 56.1 kg CO2 per GJ. Gas emits (74.1 minus 56.1) / 74.1 = 24.3% less per GJ. Total saving = substitution share x 24.3%, where the substitution share is the fraction of fuel energy that now comes from gas, not the fraction of litres or cubic metres.

What decides the real saving

Why NCR sites are converting

The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR regulates diesel generator use through Direction No. 76 of 29 September 2023, amended in February 2024. It sets conditions by generator size, such as conversion to dual fuel and retrofitted emission control devices, for sets to keep running, including during GRAP restrictions. These rules are about air pollution, mainly particulates and NOx, not CO2. Check the direction in force for your set's kW rating on caqm.nic.in before relying on it.

How to evidence the saving

  1. Keep 6 to 12 months of diesel invoices and DG kWh readings before the retrofit.
  2. After the retrofit, keep diesel invoices and PNG or CNG bills for the DG set, with kWh readings for the same months.
  3. Compare kg CO2 per kWh generated before and after, not total CO2, so changes in outage hours do not distort the result.
  4. Keep the kit supplier's test report with the records.

Worked example: 10,000 litres of diesel a month

The 60% substitution and 5% efficiency loss are assumptions for the arithmetic. Methane slip is not included.

What Senseible does here

Senseible counts diesel litres and PNG scm from your invoices in Scope 1 at IPCC 2006 defaults (diesel 2.68 kg CO2 per litre, PNG 2.05 kg CO2 per scm), so months before and after the retrofit show the shift in fuel. The substitution share and methane slip come from the kit supplier's tests.
