If green hydrogen or ammonia is shipped from Duqm to the EU, what does CBAM count?
Hydrogen counts direct emissions only, close to zero for electrolysis. Ammonia is a fertiliser good, so indirect emissions from electricity count too; renewable power with proper evidence keeps that low. Projects at Duqm are still in development, so check each project's status.
Hydrogen
Under CBAM, hydrogen carries direct emissions only. Electrolysis emits almost nothing directly; the electricity behind it is not counted for hydrogen.
Ammonia
- Ammonia is listed with fertilisers.
- Direct emissions from synthesis and any fuel burnt.
- Indirect emissions from electricity consumed, which needs evidence of renewable supply to count as low.
Other rules
EU renewable fuel rules for RFNBO status are separate from CBAM and have their own evidence requirements.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, electricity and production documents into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions an EU importer asks for.
