How do I calculate the emissions of charging electric buses at a depot?

Take the depot charger electricity from its meter, multiply by 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, and divide by bus kilometres run. The company with operational control of the depot and buses reports it as Scope 2; an authority contracting the service records it in Scope 3.

What to meter

Who reports it

Under contracts where an operator runs buses for a transport authority, write down who has operational control of the depot and the buses, and who pays the power bill. Under the operational control approach, that decides whose Scope 2 it is.

Per passenger-km

Divide by passenger-km as well when ticket data allows, so electric and diesel routes can be compared on the same basis.

Worked example: one depot, one month (illustrative inputs)

Readings are illustrative; use the depot charger meter and fleet km records.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel invoices and fuel card statements (diesel 2.68 and CNG 2.69 kg CO2, IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 record. Hired transport goes to the Scope 3 evidence trail, and distance or tonne-km estimates are labelled as estimates.
