Senseible

How do I estimate diesel use and CO2 for an excavator or JCB from its hour meter?

Litres per hour = rated engine kW x load factor x specific fuel consumption in g per kWh / 1,000 / 0.835. Multiply by hour meter hours for litres, then by 2.68 kg CO2 per litre. Label it an estimate, and replace it with fuel slips or tank records as soon as you have them.

The three inputs

Why fuel records beat the estimate

Idle time, operator habit, ground conditions and engine wear can move real use well away from the formula. If the machine is filled from a site tank or bowser, log litres per machine at each fill. If it is filled at a pump, keep the slips. Over a month, litres bought is the figure to report.

Which scope it falls in

Sense checks

Illustrative example: a 20 tonne excavator over 1,500 hours

Use the machine's rated kW, the load factor for its machine type and the engine's own fuel data.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads diesel invoices and fuel slips and applies 2.68 kg CO2 per litre, keeping each slip as evidence. Hour based figures are recorded as estimates until fuel records replace them.
