What does Faridabad's engineering cluster use in energy, and what do auto OEMs ask its suppliers for?
Grid power, backed by a DG set in almost every unit, plus furnace oil, LPG, pet coke, wood and gas, across about 12,015 MSMEs, 35% of them making auto parts. The 5,347 units surveyed used 426,167 toe a year. OEMs ask each vendor for monthly fuel and power, Scope 1 and 2, and a figure per part.
The cluster, from the last full survey (2011 to 12)
- About 12,015 MSMEs: 4,612 micro, 7,039 small and 364 medium.
- Auto parts make up 35% of units, sheet metal components 14% and fabrication 11%. Castings, forging, heat treatment, electroplating, fasteners, rubber and plastics make up most of the rest.
- A large share work as vendors to car, two-wheeler and tractor OEMs.
- Energy is just over 2% of manufacturing cost in fabrication units and over 44% in foundries, so the same OEM form means very different work for different vendors.
Where the energy goes
- Grid power from DHBVN runs presses, machine shops and welding. Power cuts mean almost every unit has a DG set, so diesel turns up in nearly every Scope 1 figure.
- Furnace oil, LPG, pet coke, wood and piped gas fire furnaces in forging, heat treatment and foundries.
- The 5,347 units in the survey used 426,167 toe a year: on average about 80 toe a unit, a rough figure that hides a spread from tiny fabricators to large foundries.
- The survey's biggest saving options: switching furnaces from furnace oil to PNG or electric, excess air control, furnace temperature control and inverter welding machines.
What the OEM supplier form asks, and where each answer comes from
- Electricity in kWh by month: your DHBVN bills.
- Diesel for the DG set in litres: fuel purchase slips, less stock in the tank at year end.
- Furnace fuels by month: furnace oil, LPG, PNG or pet coke invoices.
- Scope 1 and Scope 2 in tonnes CO2e, with the factors named.
- Output: parts or tonnes shipped to that OEM, so it can work out a figure per part.
- Plans to cut emissions: a fuel switch or furnace upgrade, with dates.
Worked example: a sheet metal press shop with a paint oven, one month
- Grid power: 40,000 kWh x 0.675 kg = 27.0 t CO2 (Scope 2)
- DG set: 1,500 L diesel x 2.645 kg = 3.97 t CO2 (Scope 1)
- Paint oven: 1,200 kg LPG x 2.98 kg = 3.58 t CO2 (Scope 1)
- Total: 34.5 t CO2 for 180 t of pressings shipped, about 0.19 t CO2 per tonne from the plant's own energy
- The steel sheet comes on top. At 1.15 t of sheet per tonne of pressings, the mill's figure per tonne of sheet matters far more than your power bill
Quantities are an example. Factors: CEA grid factor for FY 2025-26 and IPCC 2006 fuel defaults. Use your mill's figure for the sheet; the 1.15 yield is an example.
What Senseible does here
Upload a year of DHBVN bills, DG diesel slips and furnace fuel invoices, and Senseible returns the monthly Scope 1 and 2 figures an OEM form asks for, each line linked to the bill it came from.
