Can I use FASTag toll statements to prove the distance my trucks travelled for freight emissions?

Yes, as evidence of the route, not as a distance on its own. A FASTag statement shows which toll plazas the truck crossed and when. Measure the map distance through those plazas, add the legs before the first and after the last, and cross-check the total with the e-way bill or trip sheet.

What the statement holds

Turning plazas into distance

  1. Group the plaza entries by trip, using dates, times and the trip sheet.
  2. Take the road distance from origin to the first plaza, between plazas in order, and from the last plaza to the destination, on a map service.
  3. Add them for the trip distance; record which map service and date you used.
  4. Compare with the e-way bill distance for the same consignment. A gap of more than about 10 percent needs a reason, such as a detour or a second drop.

Why it strengthens your data, and one catch

Toll records are a third-party, time-stamped trace of the route actually driven, and proof the trip happened. For own trucks, the best evidence is still the fuel record: litres bought per trip x 2.68 kg CO2 per litre gives Scope 1 directly, and the FASTag route checks that the fuel matches the trip.

The catch: if you report tonne-km under ISO 14083 or the GLEC Framework, both base transport activity on the shortest feasible distance from a route planner, not the distance actually driven. Use the FASTag route to explain the gap between the two, not to replace the planned figure.

Where it falls short

Worked example: Ahmedabad to Pune, 9 tonnes

If you own the truck, use the trip's diesel litres for Scope 1 and keep the tonne-km for intensity reporting. For an ISO 14083 or GLEC report, take tonne-km from the shortest feasible distance in your routing tool instead.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads freight records and diesel invoices into dated, fingerprinted entries. Toll statements are kept as supporting evidence alongside them.
