How do I calculate the carbon footprint of fishing net per kg?
Multiply the nylon or HDPE twine per kg of net by the yarn maker's per-kg figure, then add knotting machine electricity, heat setting, dyeing and packing. Divide the unit's energy by kg of netting dispatched.
Material
- Nylon multifilament or HDPE monofilament twine by weight.
- Dyes and binders.
- Ropes, floats and sinkers if the net is rigged.
Process
- Knotting or knotless netting machines.
- Heat setting and stretching.
- Bales and packing.
Per kg
Report per kg of netting, and separately per rigged net if floats and ropes are included.
Worked example: fishing net unit per kg (one month)
- Electricity: 30,000 kWh x 0.710 = 21,300 kg CO2
- PNG: 1,500 SCM x 2.05 = 3,075 kg CO2
- Netting dispatched (kg): 40,000
- Plant total: 24,375 / 40,000 = 0.609 kg CO2 per kg
- Add twine and rigging for the full figure
Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
