What does a gate-to-gate carbon footprint mean?
It covers only what happens inside your own plant: the energy and fuel used from the moment materials arrive to the moment the product leaves. It leaves out raw materials and delivery. Buyers often want cradle-to-gate, so say clearly which one you are sending.
The common boundaries
- Gate-to-gate: your own processes only.
- Cradle-to-gate: raw materials plus your processes.
- Cradle-to-grave: adds use and disposal.
Why it is useful
It is the part you control and can measure from your own bills. It is a good starting point before you collect supplier data.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site, and labels estimates as estimates.
