Can steel certified under India's Green Steel Taxonomy lower my Scope 3 emissions?

Yes, if you use the certified intensity as a supplier-specific factor for the tonnes you actually bought from that plant, for the matching year. India's Green Steel Taxonomy classes steel below 2.2 t CO2e per tonne of finished steel as green. The certificate itself is not an offset.

What the taxonomy rates

The Ministry of Steel launched the Green Steel Taxonomy on 12 December 2024. It rates steel by emission intensity per tonne of finished steel: below 2.2 t CO2e qualifies as green, with star ratings for lower intensities. The National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) is the agency for measurement, reporting and verification, and issues the certificates on a financial-year basis.

How it reduces your Scope 3

The GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard prefers supplier-specific data over averages. If you replace a route average with the certified intensity for the steel you bought, your Category 1 figure falls by the difference times the tonnes. The reduction is real only for tonnes delivered from the certified plant in the period the rating covers.

What it does not do

Buying green steel does not cancel emissions elsewhere in your inventory. It changes the factor on the steel lines only. You cannot claim a green steel intensity for steel from other mills, even if you hold a certificate from one.

Worked example: switching 200 t to a rated mill

The before figure is illustrative. Use the supplier's certified value and keep the certificate with the invoices.

What Senseible does here

Senseible's supplier evidence trail can hold the green steel certificate and its stated intensity next to the purchase invoices for your Scope 3 steel lines.
