Can household biogas plant credits get the CCP label?
It depends on the methodology. ICVCM found household biodigester credits under AMS-I.E and under Gold Standard's AMS-I.I do not meet the Core Carbon Principles. Gold Standard's Methodology for Animal Manure Management and Biogas Use for Thermal Energy Generation, versions 1.0 to 1.1, is CCP-Approved. Its version 2.0 has no decision yet.
Status by methodology
- AMS-I.E, switch from non-renewable biomass for thermal use, v1.0 to 13.0: Does not meet, under Gold Standard and the VCS.
- AMS-I.I, biogas or biomass thermal applications for households and small users, v1.0 to 6.0: Does not meet, under Gold Standard.
- Gold Standard manure management and biogas for thermal energy, v1.0 to 1.1: CCP-Approved.
- The same Gold Standard methodology, v2.0: assessed internally, no decision shown.
Same digester, different answer
A family biogas plant fed with cattle dung can be credited under any of these methods. Which one the programme registered under decides whether the credits can carry the label. If you are buying, ask for the methodology and version on each batch, not just "biogas".
For a programme being designed now
- Choose the methodology with the label decision in mind, as switching later means new validation.
- Under Gold Standard, households can be grouped in a programme of activities, which runs up to 20 years from the crediting start of its first unit.
- Plan monitoring that shows each digester is still in use: a plant that stops working stops reducing emissions, and verifiers check for it.
What Senseible does here
Senseible gives carbon credit eligibility signals from fuel and energy records, such as the LPG or firewood purchases a digester replaces. It does not run biogas programmes or label credits.
- Dairy biogas plant credits
- Cookstove credits and over-crediting
- Gold Standard PoA duration
- Carbon credits
