How much CO2 has India's PAT scheme saved so far?
More than 106 million tonnes of CO2 from 2015 to June 2024, according to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. Cycle I alone accounted for about 31 million tonnes and cycle II for about 68 million tonnes. These are BEE's estimates from the energy saved by designated consumers.
What BEE reports
- Cycle I (2012-13 to 2014-15): 8.67 MTOE saved, about 31 Mt CO2
- Cycle II (2016-17 to 2018-19): about 14.08 MTOE saved, about 68 Mt CO2
- All cycles, 2015 to June 2024: more than 106 Mt CO2
Context
India revised its Nationally Determined Contribution in August 2022 to cut the emission intensity of GDP by 45% by 2030 from 2005 levels. PAT is one of the instruments, alongside renewable energy certificates and now the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme.
Using the figure
Quote it as BEE's estimate with its date. It is a national figure; a plant claiming its own share needs its own measured savings.
What Senseible does here
Senseible turns fuel and electricity invoices into monthly energy and emission records per site, the raw material for tracking specific energy consumption against a target.
