How do I calculate emissions from steam bought from a park boiler or neighbouring plant?

Multiply the tonnes of steam on your invoices by the supplier's CO2 per tonne of steam, and report the result as Scope 2. The supplier's factor is its fuel CO2 divided by the steam it produced. If the supplier will not share it, estimate one from the boiler fuel and label it as an estimate.

What to ask the steam supplier for

Put this request in the steam supply contract. A park utility serving many units can send one monthly statement to every customer.

The calculation with supplier data

Use the steam quantity from your invoice or your own inlet meter, not the rupee amount. Steam tariffs change with coal prices, so a spend figure tells you little about tonnes.

  1. Supplier CO2 for the month = each fuel quantity x its emission factor, added up.
  2. Supplier factor = supplier CO2 / tonnes of steam on the same basis as your meter.
  3. Your Scope 2 = tonnes of steam on your invoice x supplier factor.

When the supplier will not share fuel data

Build an estimate and label it. Take the energy added per tonne of steam (steam enthalpy at the delivery pressure minus feedwater enthalpy, from steam tables), divide by an assumed boiler efficiency of 75 to 85%, and multiply by the IPCC 2006 default CO2 factor per GJ for the supplier's fuel. Ask again each year, and switch to supplier data as soon as you get it; note the change so earlier years can be compared.

Edge cases

Worked example: 600 t of steam in a month

The 80% efficiency is an assumption and the 94.6 kg per GJ is the IPCC 2006 default for bituminous coal on a net calorific value basis. The gap between 193.6 t and 170.6 t is why supplier data is worth chasing.

What Senseible does here

Senseible can keep your steam invoices as evidence, but it has no steam factor in its published factor set, so it does not calculate purchased steam emissions automatically. You apply the supplier's factor or your labelled estimate yourself.
