How do I check whether an aluminium supplier's low-carbon claim is credible?

Ask what the number covers and what powers the smelter. A credible low-carbon claim gives t CO2e per tonne of primary metal on a named boundary, shows the smelter's electricity source with contracts or certificates, and comes with an independent verification. Then check it against International Aluminium Institute regional averages.

Start with the smelter's electricity

Smelting takes roughly 14 to 15 MWh of electricity per tonne of metal, and that varies far less between plants than the power source does. The power source therefore decides most of the footprint. Coal power at about 1 t CO2 per MWh puts roughly 14 to 15 t CO2 into every tonne; hydro or other renewable power puts in close to nothing.

So the first question is simple: what generated the smelter's electricity in the year of the claim, and in what shares. A low figure from a smelter that runs on coal needs an explanation.

Evidence that makes a claim usable

  1. A verification statement from an independent body, naming the plant, year, standard and boundary.
  2. The calculation basis: electricity MWh by source, anode consumption, and factors used.
  3. For EU imports, a match with the supplier's CBAM data, remembering that CBAM covers only direct emissions for aluminium for now.
  4. Under the Scope 3 Standard, record this as supplier-specific data and rate its quality; if the evidence is thin, fall back to an average factor and say so.

Worked example: does the arithmetic hold?

Estimates for illustration. A gap this size means the claim rests on something else, such as certificates, scrap or a narrower boundary; ask which.

What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps supplier documents in its separate Scope 3 evidence trail and flags lines with a missing quantity, unit or factor, so the quantity you multiply a supplier's claimed figure by is traceable. Judging whether the claim itself holds is the job of the supplier's independent verifier.
