Howrah foundries ship over a million tonnes of castings a year: what carbon data does a unit there need?

Coke per tonne melted, electricity, and tonnes of good castings by product, month by month. TERI's 2025 profile puts Howrah's roughly 320 foundries at 356,512 tonnes of CO2 a year, 77% from coke. If you export cast iron pipes or fittings to the EU, CBAM makes this data a customs matter.

Which buyers will ask

The records to start keeping

  1. A melt log for each heat: charging coke, metal charged, metal tapped. TERI recommends this as a no-cost saving too.
  2. Coke invoices in tonnes, with ash content where the dealer states it.
  3. Monthly electricity bills, and a sub-meter on any induction furnace.
  4. Pig iron and scrap purchases by supplier, because CBAM counts the pig iron you charge.
  5. Despatches in tonnes of good castings, split by product code. Payment by weight does not tell you this.

The cheapest cut

Moving from 110 kg to about 80 kg of coke per tonne, which TERI expects from a well-run divided blast cupola, saves about a quarter of melting CO2. The payback is about a year. Old SCR induction furnaces can be replaced with IGBT ones, which pay back in two to three years.

Worked example: a micro cupola foundry melting 120 t a month

Coke at 3.02 t CO2 per tonne is the IPCC 2006 default; TERI's own cluster total implies about 2.9 for Howrah's high ash coke. 120 t a month is an example; the cluster tonnage is the sum of TERI's production table.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads coke and electricity invoices into dated records for the embedded emissions an EU importer needs for covered pipes and fittings, built from your actual figures. The CBAM calculator shows what default values would cost your importer instead.
