How do we report HVO renewable diesel in Scope 1?
HVO is made from vegetable oils or waste fats, so the CO2 from burning it is biogenic: report it separately, outside the scope totals. Methane and nitrous oxide from combustion still count in Scope 1. Its production and transport emissions go in Scope 3 Category 3. Keep the supplier certificate showing the feedstock.
What to record
- Litres of HVO and of fossil diesel separately.
- The blend share if bought as a blend.
- Supplier feedstock and sustainability documents.
Blends
For a blend, only the fossil share counts as Scope 1 CO2. The renewable share is biogenic.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills and applies IPCC 2006 factors and the CEA grid factor (0.710 kg CO2 per kWh), so you can compare Scope 1 and 2 before and after a change from the documents themselves.
