How much CO2 did India's power sector emit in FY 2025-26?
About 1,189 million tonnes of CO2 from grid electricity generation in FY 2025-26, by CEA's database version 22.0. That is down from about 1,236 million tonnes in FY 2024-25, the first fall since FY 2020-21, while net generation including renewables rose to 1,761 BU.
Total emissions, million tonnes CO2
- FY 2021-22: 1,002.42
- FY 2022-23: 1,108.11
- FY 2023-24: 1,203.36
- FY 2024-25: 1,235.96
- FY 2025-26: 1,189.04
What drove the fall
- Gross thermal generation fell from 1,363,890 MU to 1,306,951 MU.
- Renewable generation rose from 255,009 MU to 310,585 MU.
- Hydro rose from 148,634 MU to 167,166 MU.
Boundary
From FY 2022-23 the totals cover electricity injected into the grid, including grid-connected captive plants. CEA's annexure table shows 1,189.29 for FY 2025-26 against 1,189.04 in its main results table; the difference is small and both round to about 1,189.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills into dated kWh records per meter and site, so whichever CEA factor and version you apply, each Scope 2 figure traces back to the bill and the factor behind it.
