What goes into the CBAM figure for high-carbon ferrochrome from Inner Mongolia?
Direct emissions only: carbon from coke and other reductants, electrode paste and any fuel, worked out by mass balance. Ferro-chromium under CN 7202 4 is covered, but the large electricity use of the furnaces is not counted, even where it comes from coal.
What counts
- Carbon in coke, semi-coke and coal charged to the furnace, less carbon leaving in the alloy and slag.
- Electrode paste consumed.
- Fuel used for drying or preheating ore.
What does not
Electricity is an indirect emission, and for iron and steel goods, which include ferro-alloys, only direct emissions are charged. It still belongs in any product footprint a buyer asks for.
Records to keep
- Reductant purchases with carbon content from lab tests.
- Alloy output and its carbon content.
- Slag tonnage and carbon analysis.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, electricity and production documents into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions an EU importer asks for.
