How does a Kalinganagar ferrochrome plant count chrome ore in Scope 3?
Chrome ore bought from Sukinda valley mines is a purchased good, Scope 3 category 1: tonnes times a factor for mining and processing, ideally from the mine. Trucking it to the plant is category 4 if you pay for the freight.
Two lines, two categories
- Category 1: ore tonnes times the mine's figure per tonne. Ask the mine for its diesel, explosives and electricity per tonne if it has no published number.
- Category 4: tonne kilometres by truck or rail times a factor for the mode, when you pay the transporter.
What is not Scope 3
Ore drying or briquetting inside your own plant is Scope 1. Electricity your plant buys is Scope 2.
Why bother
It is small next to the furnace, but EU buyers asking for a cradle to gate figure expect it. A mine figure based on its own diesel is better than a generic number.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the energy invoices behind the making stage into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, and keeps material invoices on the Scope 3 trail. Material factors come from your supplier or a named database and are labelled with their source, so the product figure can be traced line by line.
