How much electricity and CO2 does a cold store of under 2,500, 2,500-5,000 or over 5,000 tonnes use a year?

TERI's Kundli figures: about 220,500 kWh a year for a store under 2,500 t, 488,100 kWh for 2,500 to 5,000 t, and 855,700 kWh above 5,000 t. That is 149, 329 and 578 t CO2 on the FY 2025-26 grid factor, and about 132 kWh per tonne of capacity in every band.

The average stores behind the figures

Read the 132 kWh carefully

All three figures come to the same 132 kWh per tonne of capacity, which tells you they scale with size rather than measure how well each store runs. Use them to sanity-check a bill. To judge your own store, divide monthly kWh by tonnes actually in store that month, and compare season with season.

If you rent space and a buyer asks

A trader or brand storing produce reports its share of the store's electricity as Scope 3. The fairest split is tonne-months: your tonnes times months stored, over the store's total tonne-months for the year. Ask the store for its annual kWh and occupancy; most keep both for billing.

What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps stored-goods electricity as a Scope 3 line in your supplier evidence trail, so a buyer can see the store's kWh, your tonne-months and the factor behind your share.
