Do landfill gas-to-electricity credits on Verra get the CCP label?
Only up to 10 MWe. Verra's CCP list covers ACM0001 v15.0 to v19.0 and AMS-III.G v9.0 to v10.0. Landfill gas projects that do not generate electricity all qualify, but gas-to-electricity projects qualify only at a capacity of 10 megawatts electrical or below.
Verra's conditions
- ACM0001, flaring or use of landfill gas, v15.0 to v19.0: all project types without power generation; gas-to-electricity up to 10 MWe.
- AMS-III.G, landfill methane recovery, v9.0 to v10.0: all project types without power generation; gas-to-electricity applying AMS-I.A or AMS-I.D up to 10 MWe.
- VMR0016 v1.0, Verra's revision of ACM0001: projects with revenue beyond carbon credits must show additionality with VT0009, and any benchmark analysis must show carbon revenue changes the economics decisively.
What ICVCM decided
ACM0001 v15.0 to 19.0 and AMS-III.G v9.0 to 10.0 are CCP-Approved under both Gold Standard and Verra's VCS, and VMR0016 v1.0 under the VCS. The same methodologies under Global Carbon Council had no decision shown. The 10 MWe condition above is Verra's; check Gold Standard's own label process if you register there.
Why the tonnes are large
Captured methane is converted at a 100-year GWP of 28 under the VCS for reductions from 2021 on. Destroying 1,000 t of methane is 28,000 t CO2e before the methodology's deductions, which is why buyers and verifiers look closely at gas flow and methane content records.
Example: two city landfills
- Landfill A flares all gas: qualifies for CCP labels under ACM0001 v15.0 to v19.0
- Landfill B runs 6 MWe of gas engines: qualifies
- Landfill C runs 12 MWe of gas engines: does not qualify under Verra's condition
- Methane destroyed at B: 1,500 t a year, so about 1,500 x 28 = 42,000 t CO2e before deductions
Capacities and tonnes are an example.
What Senseible does here
Senseible gives carbon credit eligibility signals and keeps electricity and fuel records traceable to source bills. It does not monitor landfill gas or label credits.
