How much does a medium frequency furnace save over a mains frequency induction furnace?

Expect about 90 kWh less per tonne of molten metal. BEE's Punjab foundry report puts 50 Hz mains frequency furnaces at 680 to 690 kWh per tonne and medium frequency furnaces, above 500 Hz, at 590 to 600. For 2,250 t a year that is 202.5 MWh and about 137 t CO2.

Why the medium frequency furnace uses less

A mains frequency furnace has low power density, so it melts slowly and loses heat over the long cycle. A medium frequency furnace runs at about three times the power density, melts faster and loses less heat, though frequency conversion adds some electrical loss. It also needs no molten heel and starts up quicker.

When it pays slower

The saving scales with tonnes melted. At 1,000 t a year, 90 kWh a tonne is 90 MWh and Rs 4.5 lakh at the report's rate, so the same Rs 30.08 lakh takes about 6.7 years to pay back. Work it out with your own tonnes and today's tariff before you decide.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads monthly electricity bills and gives kWh and CO2 linked to each bill; divide by your melt tonnes and you have the per tonne figure to compare before and after. The green loan check shows what a lender needs.
